wildflowersThe city of Sallisaw, OK, is privileged to be located near a fantastic variety of beautiful state parks. Whether you’re looking for a day trip out in nature, or to spend a few days at a peaceful local campsite, then the parks on this list will certainly not disappoint.

1. Greenleaf State Park

Tucked away in the beautiful rolling hills to the northwest of Sallisaw, Greenleaf State Park is an especially family-friendly place to visit. The park encompasses the picturesque Greenleaf Lake, as well as some fantastic hiking trails that wind through the natural beauty of the park. The lake itself is perfect for fishing or kayaking, but you aren’t allowed motorized watercraft on the lake.

Speaking of fishing, the kid’s pond allows children under the age of 16 to fish free of charge, and without the need for a permit. Greenleaf is one of those parks that’s particularly good to stay the night, whether that’s in one of the historic stone cabins or at the park campsite.

2. Tenkiller State Park

Known as the “Heaven in the Hills”, this epitaph hardly does justice to this beautiful park, tucked away beside its sparkling lake with over 130 miles of pristine shoreline. It’s unsurprisingly a haven for watersports of all types, including water skiing, fishing, boating, and tubing. It’s also very popular with scuba divers thanks to the crystal clear waters. There’s lots to explore beneath the surface, including a sunken airplane fuselage, helicopter, school bus, and two boats.

Back on dry land, there’s a huge number of excellent picnic spots, including over 170 picnic tables and four group pavilions that can be reserved in advance. The community building, Driftwood Nature Center, and the three hiking trails are just the icing on the cake. Ten individual campsites offer plenty of space for staying overnight, with the choice of primitive and developed sites with electrical hookups and pump-out waste stations. In addition to the various campgrounds, guests can choose between a range of cabins, with up to three bedrooms.

3. Cherokee Landing State Park

For a different perspective on the wonderful Lake Tenkiller, head to Cherokee Landing State Park, which is located just south of Tahlequah. The state park is a great spot to bring your RV, with lots of large sites available that can accommodate vehicles up to 40-feet in length. There’s lots to do when you get there, with entertainment available all week. This includes a swimming beach, and softball field, with a children’s playground also available to keep the kids busy.

Shelters and picnic tables abound along the shady shores of the lake. The shelters can be reserved in advance, making this the perfect place to come with a packed lunch, whatever the weather. A boat launch ramp, which is illuminated at night, is also available.

We love hearing about all your adventures at the local parks, so pop down to Blue Ribbon Chevrolet today and tell us what you’ve been getting up to.
