Sequoyah’s Cabin Museum
Sequoyah’s Cabin is a historic structure just north of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, nestled in the beautiful rolling countryside. The cabin is historically significant because it celebrates Sequoyah, the famous soldier and scholar who introduced a written alphabet for the Cherokee language. Explore Sequoyah’s one-room cabin, which he built in 1829, and be transported back to an era when Sequoyah pushed the Cherokee Nation to improve their literacy.
In addition to a Trail of Tears exhibit, the museum also includes an iron kettle used to make salt at an adjacent saline spring, a monument commemorating Sequoyah’s participation in the War of 1812, and a spectacular sculpture marking his place among the greatest intellectuals of the19th century.
14 Flags Museum
At the 14 Flags Museum in Sallisaw, in eastern Oklahoma, visitors are invited to explore Oklahoma’s colorful history through the lens of 14 different nationalities. A train depot stands on the museum’s grounds and three old cabins, the oldest of which was built by Samuel Lattimore in 1835. Franklin Faulkner constructed the other one sometime in the 1840s. The third cabin features an exhibit from the Trail of Tears.
