Your Chevrolet’s engine is precisely balanced and meticulously engineered. It’s also the most expensive component in your car, so the thought of engine damage can be terrifying. However, as long as you are alert to the early warning signs, many engine problems are straightforward to fix, so be sure to contact your Chevy dealer if you notice any of the following symptoms.

1. Overheating

If your car has one, then it’s always worth keeping an eye on the temperature gauge, as this will give you an early warning of engine issues. It could indicate that the oil has become dirty and needs changing, or that there’s a problem with your Chevy’s engine cooling system. Either way, overlooking this problem could result in your engine becoming warped by the heat, so schedule an appointment straight away.

2. Starting Problems

There are a range of issues that could make your car hesitant to start when you turn the key in the ignition. Misfiring spark plugs are a common cause of this problem, as are a blocked fuel filter or malfunctioning fuel pump. Alternatively, you could have issues with your battery, alternator or wiring. Either way, your car is no good to you if it won’t start, so even if the problem resolves itself in the short term, you need to get it checked out.

3. Strange Noises

Because you become so attuned to the sound of your car’s engine, you’re ideally placed to pick up on the early warning signs that something is amiss. Squealing noises can indicate problems with your belts, while knocking or thumping could be rod bearings that have become worn out or loose. Any changes to the engine’s tenor or tone, and any unexpected sounds, should warrant further attention.

4. Smoking Exhaust

It’s normal for your exhaust pipe to emit white smoke for a few seconds on startup, but it’s a cause for concern if it’s excessive and continuous, as it might a sign that there’s coolant in the fuel supply. Black smoke suggests that the air-to-fuel ratio is unbalanced, perhaps as the result of a clogged air filter, leaking fuel injector, or a malfunctioning fuel pressure regulator. Blue smoke results when oil is leaking from the engine and being burned along with the fuel.

5. Check Engine Light

If the dashboard warning light starts glowing red, then you should take your car off the road immediately and organise a check. While a diagnostic check might reveal that it just needs a simple fix, it’s essential to schedule a service without delay in order to prevent more serious problems.
If you’re concerned about your car, you want to make sure that it’s in the very best hands for diagnosis and repair. That’s why you should schedule a check at Blue Ribbon Chevrolet, where we will do our utmost to keep your vehicle in the very best of health.
