Rich in Native American history and known for its scenic lakes and parks, there’s plenty to see and do in Sallisaw, OK. But once you’ve toured the local attractions, you may want to branch out and explore the many charming small towns within driving distance.

1. Claremore

The Route 66 town of Claremore was the home of both Will Rogers and Lynn Riggs, who wrote the play that was adapted into the musical Oklahoma! A visit to Claremore isn’t complete without a stop at the Will Rogers Memorial Museum, located at 1720 W. Will Rogers Blvd., where you can view his saddle collection and other artifacts.

Claremore’s historic downtown also offers shopping and dining. Be sure to stop by Swan Bros. Dairy, a fourth-generation family dairy farm that sells fresh cheese from its store at 938 E. 5th St. Claremore is just a 90-minute drive from Sallisaw.

2. Eufaula

Situated on Lake Eufaula, the largest lake in the state, this beautiful town is a great place to enjoy many of your favorite water activities. But there are also 20 blocks of shopping, restaurants, and other attractions in the downtown area, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

During warmer months, check out Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park, 610 Lakeshore Drive, which offers mini golf, a swimming pool, and a floating obstacle course. Eufaula is less than an hour’s drive from Sallisaw.

3. Sulphur

This small town is named after its mineral springs, which were preserved and eventually became the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, located at 901 W. 1st St. This recreation area offers more than 20 miles of trails as well as swimming, boating, camping, and fishing. It takes about two hours and 45 minutes to drive to Sulphur from Sallisaw.

4. Pauls Valley

Pauls Valley, which takes a little less than three hours to reach by car when traveling from Sallisaw, offers a couple of unique attractions that make it worth the drive. The Toy & Action Figure Museum, located at 111 S. Chickasaw St., is one highlight. The Santa Fe Depot Museum, located at 204 S. Santa Fe St., is also worth a spot on your itinerary.

And because Oklahoma is famous for its pecan pie, no trip to Pauls Valley is complete without a stop at Field’s Pies, at 100 Fields Row. In addition to its well-known pecan pie, Field’s also sells german chocolate and lemon pies, so you may want to stock up. Fortunately, the rear seats in your Chevrolet Equinox can be folded down for extra cargo space.

With so many terrific Oklahoma towns to explore, it’s important that you have a great vehicle on hand. Visit Blue Ribbon Chevrolet when it’s time to purchase your next car or truck.
