There is a lot to love about living in Sallisaw, OK. From boating and fishing to biking and hiking, there are seemingly endless ways you can spend a relaxing day enjoying the natural beauty around the city. However, it is not just nature lovers that this beautiful area caters to. There is also plenty for history lovers to see. Keep reading to discover our top three historic sites in the area if you need some inspiration.

1. Fort Smith National Historic Site

One of our favorite historical places near Sallisaw is Fort Smith National Historic Site at 301 Parker Ave. This historic site preserves nearly eight decades of history from Christmas Day 1817, when the fort was established, to 1896 when Judge Isaac C. Parker’s jurisdiction over the fort ended.

One of the greatest things about this historic site is its convenience. It is open from sunrise to sunset daily. We also love the natural beauty that can be enjoyed after touring the fort. For instance, you can see such birds as little blue herons and peregrine falcons.

2. 14 Flags Museum

If you want to take a step back in time for a while, we strongly recommend checking out 14 Flags Museum at 400 E Cherokee Ave. One thing we love about this museum is its accessibility. The parking lot is wheelchair accessible, so you will have no trouble bringing your kids if they are in strollers.

This museum can be found in a restored cabin that was constructed in 1845 by one of Sequoyah County’s first lawyers. Once you’re done viewing artifacts from the mid-1800s, you can walk around the museum complex. There are many historical items displayed within numerous log cabins on the property.

3. Sequoyah’s Cabin Museum

We also recommend visiting Sequoyah’s Cabin Museum at 470288 OK-101. The cabin that houses this museum was constructed in 1829, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places due to its incredible historical significance.

From 10 to 4 Tuesday through Saturday, you can tour the cabin where Sequoyah lived and get a feel for what life was like in the early 1800s. You can also take in some of the natural beauty while meandering around the 10-acre park that the cabin sits on.
