The 54-mile route takes you through several beautiful landscapes and unique environments. The area features a diversity of foliage and colors that you won’t normally find between the Appalachians and the Rockies.

Visitors from Oklahoma often travel to Talimena National Scenic Byway because there’s a lot to see. With so much natural beauty to behold, you’ll spend an entire day passing through and taking pictures of the area. In other words, make sure you bring your camera when you visit!

2. Cherokee Hills Scenic Byway

The Cherokee Hills Scenic Byway takes you on a fun and relaxing adventure through eastern Oklahoma. You get to see the beautiful lush forests of the lower Ozark mountain range while also discovering the rich cultural background of the Cherokee Indians. There are plenty of eye-popping views for you to check out.

The route takes you through several different areas in eastern Oklahoma. You’ll get to navigate the shores of Lake Tenkiller, which is one of the most scenic reservoirs in Oklahoma. Tahlequah, which is the Cherokee Nation Capital, is also along the way. The northern part of the Cherokee Hills Scenic Byway runs along the Illinois River.

3. Wichita Mountains Scenic Byway

Located more than three hours west of Sallisaw is the Wichita Mountains Scenic Byway. Visitors come here from all over the country to see the unique landscapes and travel through historic communities. During the warmer months, the area features a diversity of foliage with beautiful colors.

The Wichita Mountains Scenic Byway is also a great place to visit for viewing wildlife. The route passes through the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. While there, you’ll get to see over 50 species of mammals as well as reptiles, amphibians, and plenty of birds.

4. Mountain Gateway Scenic Byway

Residents of eastern Oklahoma are just a short drive away from Mountain Gateway Scenic Byway, which travels through the Ouachita Mountains. The heavily forested areas along the route allow you to enjoy nature to the fullest. There are also plenty of opportunities for outdoor creation when you’re driving through.
