Getting a flat can be very annoying. One minute you’re happily driving, and the next you can almost feel the air gushing out of one of your tires. If this happens, you could call a mechanic to replace the tire or change it yourself. As your Chevy dealer, we want to give you the east steps to replace that pesky flat tire and look like a pro at the same time.

Find a Flat Space

It might not be obvious, but for safety, you need a flat area for your car while you change the tire. It’s also important that the selected area is as far away from other moving vehicles as possible. Changing a tire requires concentration, and this is much easier to achieve when you know no vehicle will pass by anywhere near you.

Safety First

Once parked in a safe area, switch off the engine, pull up the hand brake, and switch on your hazard lights. At this time, you can also raise your hood and deploy warning triangles or road flares behind your car. All these actions help to prevent your car from moving and warn other drivers that you’re stationary.

Find the Tools

Changing a flat requires three items. You’ll need the spare, a lug wrench, and a jack. Some jacks have a built-in lug wrench. These items are usually all kept in your trunk, but you can find their exact location by checking your car manual.

Loosen the Nuts

Before you lift your car, use the lug wrench to loosen each lug nut. The nuts are tightened securely, so you’ll need to apply force to loosen them. Once the nuts are loose enough to turn by hand, it lifts your car.

Lifting Time

Position the jack underneath your car as close to the flat as possible. Your Chevy has flat reinforced sections behind each wheel. These sections allow you to place the jack safely and securely. Once it’s in position, use the jack to lift your car a few inches off the ground.

Replace the Tire

Remove all the lug nuts, lift the flat off the wheel hub, and place it on one side. Lift the space onto the hub and rotate it until the holes are in line with the holes in the wheel hub. Screw the lug nuts back on as tightly as you can, then lower your Chevy.

Time To Go

Use the lug wrench to tighten each lug nut as securely as possible. The tire is changed, so you only need to replace the tools and drive off.
