Sallisaw, OK is a great city to call home. There are half a dozen parks in the city, and it is refreshing to spend time enjoying beautiful green space. If you are looking to spend more time in the great outdoors, keep reading to learn about several ways you can get in touch with nature near Sallisaw.

1. Fishing at Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge

One great way to deepen your connection to nature is to fish at Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge at 107993 S 4520 Road. You can fish for blue catfish, channel catfish, and flathead catfish from a boat or bank. You can also fish for black and white crappie, sauger, bluegill, walleye, white bass, striped bass, and largemouth bass. There are several fishing decks and boat launches at this national wildlife refuge.

There are also five trails you can walk or bike down. Our favorite is the 1.09-mile Horton Slough Nature Trail which gives you the chance to spot American bald eagles and other wildlife. You can also get a great view of Sally Jones Lake. We also love the view from the 1.02-mile Sandtown Nature Trail of the Arkansas and Canadian Rivers’ delta.

2. Camping at Applegate Cove

Camping at Applegate Cove at 460471 E 1140 Rd is another great way to feel more in tune with nature. Along the banks of the Robert S. Kerr Reservoir, you can choose from one of 27 campsites. These peaceful campsites feature such amenities as water hookups, electric hookups, and grills. You can also find a boat ramp at the campground.

After a night of watching the stars rising in the sky and waking up peacefully in the morning to the smell of fresh air, you can launch your boat into the reservoir and fish for sand bass, black bass, crappie, and catfish.

3. Hiking at Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center

Finally, we recommend the Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center at 8300 Wells Lake Rd if you want to feel more connected to nature. There are several miles of trails, including a half-mile ADA-compliant trail that follows Wells Lake’s edge. This is a great spot to see such birds as blue herons and Canada geese. The Beaver Creek Trail is ideal for seeing wetland plants and beavers.

There are many great ways to enjoy time in nature in the Sallisaw area, but they aren’t accessible without reliable transportation. If you worry about your current vehicle breaking down when you get behind the wheel, it’s time for an upgrade. Visit us today at Blue Ribbon Chevrolet to take a 2023 Chevy Equinox for a spin.
