Nestled near the Arkansas River, Sallisaw, OK and its rich history are carefully preserved by the work of many artists who call the area home. If you find yourself visiting the area, check out one or more of these great places to see and experience the local art scene.

1. Stop By the Sallisaw Historical Mural

The Sallislaw Historical Mural is a compilation of 21 paintings taking up nearly a block of Cherokee Ave. A joint project by Sallisaw community members, the town’s historical mural is an excellent example of locally created art. It was commissioned by the GFWC-Onawa Study Club and created between 1993 and 1999. Any area artists were invited to add their artwork to the final project.

Each painting represents something of historical or cultural significance to either Sallisaw or the neighboring communities. Some familiar people, places, and scenes from local history depicted in the mural include:

  • The old downtown area
  • A baptism in Sallislaw Creek
  • Hines Round Barn
  • Shadow Creek Golf Course
  • The former Missouri Pacific Railroad station

2. Check Out Hidden Talent Fine Art in Nearby Fort Smith

Housing more than 3,100 square feet of space, Hidden Talent Art Gallery is an excellent opportunity to view artwork, including pottery, woodworking, prints, and paintings in acrylic, watercolors, and oils. Be sure to check out the gallery’s calendar if you want to schedule your visit during a reception or special event.
