Mountain biking is a popular pastime throughout the Sallisaw, Oklahoma, area. The natural beauty of this region coupled with the expansive outdoor spaces make it an excellent location for those who love to explore on two wheels. Test your biking skills on some of the top trails in and around Sallisaw.

Brushy Lake Biking Trails

Within Brushy Lake Park, you can enjoy the miles of trails that have been constructed by volunteers specifically for mountain biking. The current loop is located near the northern edge of the lake and will provide riders with stunning views of the water and surrounding greenery. The volunteers working on the trails plan to add another 3-4 miles in the future, which will make this spot one of the most appealing in the area for bikers.

During your visit, you can enjoy the quiet, secluded recreation destination. The park also houses several campsites, day-use picnic areas with grills and tables, playgrounds for children, and docks for boating and fishing. 

Tenkiller State Park

Located in nearby Vian, Tenkiller State Park is about 12 miles outside of Sallisaw. The park houses several hiking trails as well as a 1-mile multi-use trail that’s open to bikers. It starts at the park’s pool area and is fully paved for a smooth ride. As you pedal your way through the park, you’ll enjoy beautiful views of the greenery and pass by many popular attractions, so plan extra time for visiting these stops along your way.

Some of the amenities in the park include a playground for kids, several cabins, a kids’ fishing pond, and a nature center. The gently winding, mostly flat trail is great for bicyclists of all ages and skill levels, so bring the whole family along for the ride.

Lake Wister State Park

If you’re up for a more challenging ride, head to Wister, Oklahoma, which is about 45 miles from Sallisaw, and spend the day at Lake Wister State Park. The trail system within the park includes a number of multi-use trails that are open to bicyclists. The most popular trail is the Lighthorseman Trail which spans 6.2 miles in length and offers something for everyone. Depending on when you visit, you may encounter some brush that makes exploration a bit more challenging. Throughout the year, you’ll be able to see stunning views of the lake and greenery that surround it.

Lake Wister State Park also has several other trails within its system, including the Lone Star Interpretive Trail which ends at a rocky ridge that runs along one side of the park. You’ll find it at the end of the Lighthorseman Trail. In addition to the trail system, the park houses an ADA-compliant trail that is fully paved, camping and picnic areas, a swimming beach, several playgrounds, and even a miniature golf course.
