Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge is located in Vian, around half an hour’s drive west of Sallisaw.

3. Revisit the Past at Fort Smith National Historic Site

Just over the Arkansas border lies the Fort Smith National Historic Site, another fascinating historical attraction. This well-preserved site has been attracting visitors since 1961 and showcases a commissary, courtroom, and the ruins of a 200-year-old fort.

The site of Civil War battles and other historic events, it’s sure to get the kids interested in the past. Although it’s over the state border, the Fort Smith National Historic Site is under half an hour from Sallisaw. Admission is normally $10 per person though there are occasionally fee-free days. 4. Take a Hike at Brushy Lake Park

Another of Oklahoma’s premier outdoor sites, Brushy Lake Park offers a variety of opportunities for outdoor recreation. This 90-acre former state park has facilities for camping, picnicking, fishing, boating, cycling, and much more. The park is just a 15-minute drive from Sallisaw.
